Airbag Recall List For Trucks And Pickups

An airbag recall involves many trucks and pickups from 11 automakers. Hear about the lethal makes, models and years affected, and the VIN Lookup Tool.

Designed to save lives, faulty airbags by manufacturer Takata are exploding. Flying metal shards have killed eight and injured many.

In this podcast, Dan Clark gives details about the full list of 34 million trucks, pickups, vans and passenger cars just released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. See the link in this transcript to that list.

Also see the VIN Lookup Tool provided by NHTSA in the transcript below.

Dan Clark: Trucks and pickups are part of 34 million vehicles being recalled because of faulty airbags. The government finally released a list of all makes and models. We’ll look at it in a moment.

Explosive shrapnel can come flying out of an airbag. Wouldn’t that make your day? 34 million vehicles made between 2000 and 2014 have potentially defective driver and passenger airbag inflators made by Takata. Eight people have died because of them.

Sen. Nelson

Sen. Bill Nelson: And then, of course, instead of the airbag saving lives, it’s killing people.

Dan: That’s Senator Bill Nelson at a Washington hearing this week pointing out an irony about the airbags.
This week, NHTSA—the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration—released a complete list of all makes and models affected. Included in the list are nine makes and models of trucks and pickups:

○ Chevy Silverado
○ Dodge Ram
○ Diamler Sterling Bullet
○ Ford Ranger
○ GMC Sierra
○ Honda Ridgeline
○ Mazda B Series
○ Mitsubishi Raider
○ Toyota Tundra

Plus, vans and passenger cars from the same manufacturers. Also BMWs, Nissans and Subarus are on the list.

Recently, NHTSA created the VIN Lookup Tool to search by vehicle identification number. You can see if your specific rig has been recalled. That’s 34 million vehicles in the database. 34 million VINs. VIN info has been supplied by the 11 vehicle manufacturers involved. The tool is also at and there’s a link in our transcript.

There’s no shortage of airbag blame right now. Senator Claire McCaskill, at a hearing in Washington this week, gave a scathing criticism to the head of NHTSA about the study of his agency.

Sen. McCaskill

Sen. Claire McCaskill: This audit report is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. I agree. This isn’t about resources. This is about blatant, incompetent mismanagement.

Dan: NHTSA is supposed to be the airbag watchdog.

Sen. McCaskill: This is one that just jumped out at me. “When to open an investigation.” Now, if NHTSA isn’t clear about when an investigation is to be opened, we might as well shut it down!

Dan: The manufacturer, Takata, says it will supply 1 million replacement airbags monthly. With 34 million to replace, the recall will last over two years.

What if you have a recalled vehicle? Should you just park it? No one can seem to answer that question.
